During the first week of December 2025, Tesla’s humanoid robot, named Optimus, presented two very different faces. The first was that of a triumphant machine. The second, that of a machine collapsing. The most interesting aspect is not the fall itself: it is that these two images were produced almost simultaneously, and they may tell the same story of staging.

Monday, the running robot

On 3 December 2025, Tesla published a video showing Optimus running smoothly on the floor of a laboratory, with both feet leaving the ground, according to the specialist site Interesting Engineering. For a two-legged robot, running is no trivial matter: it requires managing balance at every stride, that moment when no foot touches the ground. Elon Musk, Tesla’s boss, shared the clip himself on the social network X with a laconic caption: Running robot, always according to the same source.

The same video, reports Interesting Engineering, highlights improved balance and gait. In short, the image of mastered progress, filmed under chosen conditions.

A few days later, the falling robot

Change of scenery. During a public demonstration in Miami on 8 December 2025, Optimus distributed water bottles to those present… and fell, again according to Interesting Engineering. So far, a robot falling in public can happen and is nothing scandalous.

Except that a detail set the cat among the pigeons. As it fell, the robot reportedly brought its hands to its face, a gesture that observers interpreted as that of a human teleoperator removing a virtual reality headset, according to the same source. The word was out, and doubt set in: what if a human was piloting the machine remotely behind Optimus?

What exactly is teleoperation?

A word of explanation to help make sense of it. We speak of teleoperation when a person controls the robot remotely, somewhat like a high-tech puppet, often wearing a virtual reality headset and sensors that transmit their gestures to the machine. Conversely, a so-called autonomous robot decides its own movements thanks to its artificial intelligence. The difference is huge: a teleoperated robot is impressive, but it does not prove that it can manage on its own.

The troubling point: Tesla had already sworn the contrary

And this is where the two images converge. Because this is not the first time the question has arisen. According to Interesting Engineering, Elon Musk had previously dismissed accusations of remote piloting concerning Optimus, stating that a kung-fu demonstration was a matter of artificial intelligence and not teleoperation.

We thus have, on one side, a polished clip where the robot runs alone; on the other, a live fall where a gesture looks unmistakably like that of a human pilot. And in the middle, a previous denial from the boss. Interesting Engineering also points out that the running video of 3 December, which boasts better balance, directly contrasts with the images of the fall in Miami.

Why it matters to you

Let us focus on the underlying issue, beyond the anecdote. A video of a robot running, filmed in a laboratory, is a communication image: we choose the setting, the angle, the moment. A public fall, however, is beyond control. When the same gesture, that of removing a headset, blurs the boundary between an autonomous robot and a remote-controlled robot, the question is no longer whether Optimus fell. It is about what, in everything Tesla shows us, truly works on its own.

To date, none of this information is based on a verifiable and independent demonstration clearly distinguishing what is autonomous from what is piloted. It is precisely this ambiguity that transforms a mundane fall into a real question. Until proof is provided, the right reflex remains the same when faced with any spectacular robot video: asking who, or what, is really holding the controls.
