The consumer humanoid robot market has entered its phase of democratisation. Four models dominate the offering (Unitree G1, Figure 02, Tesla Optimus Gen 2, 1X NEO), and each has its own philosophy. Before buying or renting, ask yourself these six questions.
1. What is the primary use case?
This is the structuring criterion. A domestic robot (1X NEO) does not have the same specifications as an industrial robot (Figure 02). List your three most frequent use cases first: cleaning, handling, R&D, event demos…
2. Buy or lease?
Purchase (£15,000 to £22,000) ties up capital but protects your long-term investment. Leasing (£400 to £1,800/month depending on the model) keeps your cash flow flexible and allows you to switch models when the next generation is released. For personal use without long-term certainty, leasing remains the number one option.
3. What is the minimum autonomy?
2 hours for the Unitree G1, 8 hours for the Tesla Optimus Gen 2 (announced). If you want continuous use throughout the day (warehouse, surveillance), aim for at least 5 hours. For short sessions (demos, R&D), 2 hours is more than enough. Note: manufacturer figures are for walking, not heavy manipulation.
4. Payload: 3 kg or 20 kg?
The Unitree G1 is capped at a 3 kg payload. The Figure 02 and Tesla Optimus Gen 2 reach 20 kg. If you plan serious handling (cardboard boxes, tools), the G1 is automatically ruled out. If you just want a robot that walks and performs demos, 3 kg is sufficient.
5. The software ecosystem
Unitree provides an open SDK (its strength for R&D and education). Tesla and Figure lock down their ecosystems (no public SDK to date). 1X promises a native conversational API for everyday use. If you want to programme your own tasks, SDK openness is non-negotiable.
6. After-sales service and warranty
Buying a humanoid robot is like buying a car: you need a support network. Unitree ships from China (customs delays + costly returns). Figure and 1X are structuring their European service. Tesla has its existing network. Ask the explicit question: "Where is my after-sales service in case of breakdown?"
Our methodology
The Botoide comparator synthesises these 6 criteria into a single Botoide Score, weighted according to your declared usage. The custom weighting module is expanding with each new release.
