Human in the loop

The presence of a human supervisor in the decision-making chain of a system presented as autonomous.

A system architecture in which a human operator intervenes in the decision-making or control chain, even when the system is presented as "autonomous". In humanoid robotics, it refers to the supervision, residual teleoperation or backup piloting that persists despite claims of autonomy. Partial synonym: human-in-the-loop (EN). To be distinguished from direct teleoperation (continuous control): here the human only intervenes in the event of an exception or for validation.
