The word “robot” conjures up an humanoid bringing a glass of water. What is entering British homes today looks more like a small speaker. It is called Genie, it has no arms or legs, it does not move a centimetre. And according to the Observer, at least 1,000 people are equipped with it, spread across 14 English local authorities — including more than twenty residents of Hazelhurst Court, in Lewisham.

What can it do?

The Genie is a small companion device placed in the room. Its job consists of four actions:

  • reminding users to take their medication;
  • announcing appointments scheduled in its calendar;
  • initiating video calls to loved ones;
  • offering a mood button to press morning and evening.

That is all. Devoid of arms and mobility, it performs no physical care gestures. It is not a mechanical care assistant: it is a talking reminder, connected to a calendar.

And when no one answers?

This is where the essence lies. When a person misses an appointment or does not respond to a reminder, the box makes no decision: it sends an alert to the care team, and it is a human who calls back, via video call. Beware of what this means: the machine does not monitor the home, it simply notes that no one answered. The response, however, remains human. The platform is indeed sold to providers and local authorities as a remote care tool, not as an autonomous robot.

Does it really work?

The announced figures are flattering. 96% success rate on taking medication at the correct time. A 20% increase in care capacity, an 80% improvement in productivity for the local authorities concerned — without the source specifying what is measured, or how. And approximately £11,500 saved per patient per year.

A standard precaution, and a significant one: these are claimed performances. Only one source reports them, and no independent evaluation is cited. A nice percentage announced by those who sell the device remains a sales argument until someone outside has gone to count.

The price, meanwhile, appears nowhere: neither the cost of a Genie to the resident, nor the cost to the local authority. The only financial figure available is an economy claimed by the seller.

What a reminder does not prove

The sharpest reservation comes from the Unison union. Its general secretary, Andrea Egan, puts it simply: a robot can remind you to take medication, it cannot verify that the person has actually taken it. Technology must therefore remain a complement, never a replacement. Pinar Elmaz, a care assistant at Hazelhurst Court, says the same thing differently: the system does not replace human contact.

Is the government installing all this?

No, and the distinction matters. On 29 July 2026, Prime Minister Andy Burnham visited a nursing home in Golders Green. He made two commitments there: to reform adult social care, and to create a “National Care Service”, a national public service for care for people. He also wants to advance the timeline of the independent commission entrusted to Baroness Louise Casey, whose report is now expected for summer 2027. This is what the British government blog indicates.

The Genie units, meanwhile, are installed by Cera, a health technology company presented as the UK’s leading home care provider. It is the Observer that editorially links this deployment to the reform project: the Prime Minister, for his part, has not announced anything like it. And the scope stops at fourteen English local authorities — nothing in these sources concerns France.

And the living-room humanoid, then?

The humanoid shown by Google is still on stage. On 30 July 2026, Google DeepMind published a domestic demonstration. The instruction is one sentence: “put the watering can in the green bin on the bottom shelf”. The Apollo 2 from Apptronik walks to the table, grabs the watering can, takes a few steps towards the shelves and places it there. It is the new home model, Gemini Robotics 2, that commands the five-fingered hand of this robot.

Impressive, and bounded by Google itself in the same post: its robots “still have to improve in movement speed”, and “multi-fingered dexterous manipulation remains difficult”. Another limit quantified by the company: the model that tracks work progress, Gemini Robotics ER 2, shows 57.4% accuracy when it has to say where a task in progress stands. And what we are watching remains a video published by Google, not an independent trial.

Regarding availability, Google announces three models and only one open door. Gemini Robotics ER 2, the one that reasons about the scene and breaks down the work into steps, is accessible to developers. The other two — including Gemini Robotics 2, the one that actually commands the motors — remain reserved for a few carefully selected partners. Still according to Google: no price, no consumer product, no commercialisation timeline.

This does not mean that all humanoids have remained in the laboratory. In San Francisco, Tau Robotics opened to the public on 28 July 2026, a home cleaning service provided by humanoids, at $30 an hour. But these robots are not autonomous: they are teleoperated, piloted remotely by a human operator supported by AI. Weave Robotics, for its part, lists its Isaac 1 at $7,999 cash or $449 per month, with first deliveries expected in autumn 2026, to Californian clients first. Nothing is announced for Europe. There is the gap, summarised in one week. On one side, a humanoid putting away a watering can in front of cameras, with no price or date. On the other, an armless box, already placed in the homes of at least a thousand people, which merely reminds them of the time for their pill and alerts a team when a reminder goes unanswered. The second is infinitely less spectacular. It is also the only one of the two that is already in someone’s living room — and what it triggers is not a machine decision, it is a human call.
